‘There’s another way’: One entrepreneur on helping marketers go freelance
Victoria Taylor set up Marketing Mavericks, which counts Glasgow University and Nottingham Trent among its clients, in 2020 after the pandemic hit job opportunities for graduates.
For many junior marketers, going freelance is perhaps not the obvious career trajectory. Indeed, just 2% of freelancers felt adequately educated about self-employment during their time at university, according to ComRes data.
This is something Victoria Taylor is trying to change.
In 2020, Taylor launched Marketing Mavericks – a free platform helping upskill marketing students to go freelance amid the pandemic’s squeeze on the job market and graduate opportunities.
The first university to offer the scheme to its students was Nottingham Trent, Taylor’s alma mater, before expanding to Glasgow University, Liverpool John Moores University and the University of Derby. This month, Aston University became the latest to sign up.
Marketing Mavericks works by taking students through the process of exploring freelancing, getting set up and then providing ongoing support to build a successful business.
