With over half of marketers working in London and the South East, what needs to be done to rebalance opportunities across the UK and what are the advantages of carving out a career outside the capital?

For all the chatter around northern powerhouses and creative hubs out in “the regions”, one big takeaway from our 2020 Career and Salary Survey is the obvious bias towards London when it comes to job opportunities and career progression in marketing.

Some 52.1% of the 2,227 UK-based survey respondents work in London or the South East, with nine other regions making up the remainder – none of which even reach double figures in percentage share.

Most marketers around the country are still anchored to the capital city. A change of mentality, within the industry and beyond, is needed to break that cycle, says senior digital marketing manager at Bath-based digital agency Create Engage, Hannah Urbanek.

“I think that there are a lot of opportunities now outside of London, but people aren’t really looking for them,” she states.
